In Unit 3, we discussed money matters, a surplus or a lack there of. In discussing charitable giving, your textbook defines a philanthropist as a rich person who gives money to help people who are poor or who need money to do useful things. Read the article on Paul Newman; an actor and a philanthropist, on page 34. Name a Korean philanthropist you admire or have heard of. How does he/she contribute to better the society we live in? What charitable acts made this person famous? Do you admire this person? Why or why not?
If you don't know of a Korean philanthropist, do a little research on the Internet to find one. Please be careful and do not copy and paste from the Internet.
Please make sure that your name is visible somewhere on your post as this writing will count as your attendance and your participation for Monday.
Good luck!
i think that korea philanthropist is Lee jong whan. He is 90 years old this year. He is the owner of Sam Young Chemical Cor.So he has a lot of money and he may be millionaire. But he always saves money and donate that money for their scholarship foundation. He made a scholarship foundation in 2002 and the greater part of his property gave to his foundation. His foundation gives a money to poor students.people who are poor have a chance to study. This scholarship solve a problem between rich person and poor people. He currently donated the money to seoul univ.So seoul univ. can build a library. I heard that donated money about 60 billion. This donating action is related his life hope. His life hope is making a nobel prize winner in korea. because now there is no korean receiving nobel prize winner . I admired him because it is not easy to donate all his property on foundation.it is the Noblesse oblige. These days our society needs a Noblesse oblige.Becuase we have to reduce collision between poor people and rich people. In this context he is the good examle showing the Noblesse oblige. That's why i admire Lee jong whan.

Was it 60 billion won or in dollars? It makes a huge difference. Remember to space twice after period. "I" is always capitalized. Great post Oh! I wonder if you could also post pictures on here?
DeleteA Korean philanthropist that I would like to introduce is Dr. New Il-Han. New Il-Han is the founder of Yuhan Corporation, a pharmacy company branching out in various fields ranging from pharmaceutical goods to daily necessities. Dr. New Il-Han found Yuhan Corporation in the hopes of contributing to Korean people’s general healthcare. Dr. New Il-Han imported first antituberculosis drugs to Korea and invented a painkiller antiphlamine, distributing those medicines in low price to help Korean people. Dr. New Il-Han donated his whole properties and established Yuhan high school and Yuhan University to provide educational opportunities to those in need. His company Yuhan Corporation has been contributing to Korean society by redistributing significant amount of corporation’s benefits back to Korean society, following the wills of New Il-Han. I genuinely admire New Il-Han for his deeds and the life he lived. New Il-Han is the person who did not run his company for the sake of his own welfare and prosperity but is a person who truly thought of Korean people. New Il-Han, therefore is one of the most respected figures in Korea. I, as a Korean citizen, really revere New Il-Han.

I wonder if the anti-tuberculosis drug was invented at the time when there was an outbreak of TB in Korea few decades ago? Great post!
DeleteI want to introduce Chanho Park as a Korean philanthropist. He is 43 years old and the first Major Leaguer in Korea . He is a very able baseball player and also earned a lot of money. He established a foundation which is named his name(Chanho Park) to help poor people. He gave scholarship to children who are poor and young people who want to be baseball players. So this became motive power for many children to do their share in society such as becoming baseball players. Not only support by this foundation, he keeps personal donating. He is donating 10,000won everyday by participating in program named "miracle of 10,000won". Building children rehabilitation hospital is an object of this program. I think that his donation is very meaningful because this helps children to have and achieve their dreams. Also, I think that contributing lots of money that he earned is not easy to do. However, he is doing this and he think that this is worthy. Therefore, I really admire him and I am glad that there is a person who is a philanthropist like him in Korea.
ReplyDelete-Seyun Oh(Tracy)
I wonder, if you could establish a foundation, would you want it named after you? What is the ultimate purpose of this? And so far, it looks like everyone is establishing foundations and giving away scholarships. I know you're a sports fan, thanks for the post!
DeleteI would like to introduce Yuna Kim. She is a two-time Olympic medallist of the Republic of Korea. According to a site named Yunakim.com, she began to give her money to charity since 2007. She donated all the money to six young skaters after her fist advertisement endorsement with Kookmin Bank. Also, she donated two hundred million won in the form of school uniforms to low-income-family youths after signing an advertisement contract with Ivy Club. She was named as an ambassador for the 2010–2012 Visit Korea Year. She has been rated as one of the world's most influential people in 2010 by TIME. In July 2010, She was named international UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She has donated more than 2.0 billion won as of October 2009 and is continuing her effort in many ways. She recently donated $100,000 to Nepal earthquake relief, according to UNICEF. She has stated that she hopes to become a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after the 2014 Sochi Games. She was named an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea. I admire her not only because of her career but also her good deeds.

What makes him special from the others? Is it because singers usually don't donate money?
DeleteI think that korea philanthropist is Sung ju Kim. She is 51 years old this year. She is the owner of MCM compnay. She is famous people in korea because she acquire MCM and she said difference between man and woman working mind in korean society. She is very competent and honesty. Anyway she has a lot of money. So she always donated 30% of her earnings. She donated about $ 4 billion in the past two years. In addition, she set a good principle that 10% of company's revenue use for society. I think She knows a noblesse oblige, and now knows the core of the sociey management. Also she helped the Yunbyun Sicence University in china and helped the North Korea people that have a pain. So she helped medical missionary activity. Finally she established Woman Readership Center at Yunsei Untiversity. She always think poor people and knows thier sadness. So i think she is a Korean philanthropist. I admire her and she is one of my role model.

A woman helping women! Nice! Great post!
DeleteI want to introduce Cha in Pyo as a South Korea's Philanthropist. Actually he was a famous actor in Korea but, these days he does a lot of charitable acts. For example, He helps North Korea's children and other poor countries like Africa and Philippines through donation and voluntary services. Also he participates in Compassion International which supports poor children. But, I think, the most important thing which he did is adopting two daughters. So by doing these works, I think that he contributes to the better lives which poor people would have and makes a good awareness of adoption in Korea. I believe that a real philanthropist is a person who gives his money and does voluntary services to the people who need helps with his whole. I admire Cha in Pyo because of this. When I saw the TV show which he appeared, I realized that he is the person who I think is the real philanthropist. he is really enjoying his life and seems very happy with charity.
ReplyDelete-Hwang Bo Mi(황보미)
Wow, it's hard to find Koreans who actually do adopt children. It's not enough to say someone is a philanthropist just by donating money but looks like he actually practices what he preaches. Great post!
DeleteI think that Kim Hye-Ja is an admirable philanthropist in Korea. Actress Kim Hye-Ja had started her career as a commercial model in 1970. She is an accomplished actress who has won many prizes. Also she became the first Korean actress to win the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award. In 1991, she has been selected as a goodwill ambassador for World Vision that charitable organization. Although she is 75 years old and successful actress now, she is actively involved in relief activities in every country. Recently, she donated hundred million KRW to Nepal earthquake victims. For these reasons, she got a nickname that “Mother Hyeresa” from Korean fans. Her charity work is an inspiration us all. Therefore, I think Actress Kim Hye-Ja is an admirable philanthropist in Korean.

ReplyDeleteI would like to introduce Cho yong-pil who is not only famous singer but also pilanthropist in Korea. After his wife died from a cardiac disease, He has supported children who are suffered from that. He donated all her heritage for them. Also He donated five hundread fifty million dollar from his performance profits. And he founded the foundation for children who are poor in 2009. Although he have a lease on his home, he has donated constantly for ten years. He has donated more than three hundread million won every year for his foundation. I think he is every poor and sick children's father in Korea.
ReplyDelete- Lee, Da-eun (Jenny)
Jenny, most people think you need to make a lot of money to help out the poor. Cho yongpil is an example of someone who still can help out others despite him leasing on his house. It's never too later to start helping someone out rather than waiting for that day which might never come.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!

ReplyDeleteI want to introduce Lee gwanggi as a Korean philanthropist.
ReplyDeleteLee gwanggi is a actor. Lee gwanggi had a son. In 2009, novel swine-origin influenza was popular in our society. And his son was died by novel swine-origin influenza. He was very sad. Died son, Lee seok gyu wrote fairy tale book. And his father opened the public his fairy tale book and contributed profits for fairy tale book. Lee gwanggi also contributed for son’s total amount insurance for novel swine-origin influenza to Haiti. Lee gwanggi have supported children like his son, same age africa and Indonesia children. Lee gwanggi was interested in poor neighbor like his circumstances. In 2014, he contribute total amount love bazaar to a parentless family. I admire this person because normally someone lost someone’s son, they rescatared and put down their mind. But this person volunteered and contributed to others. So I admire him and highly appreciate.

I think Lee hyo-ri is korean philanthropist. Lee hyo-ri is korean famous and beautiful singer. One day, she put 47000won in yellow envelope ans donate to 'The beautiful foundation'. This situation affects people. Many people follow her and donate 47000won. Foundation's goal is making four hundred seventy million won in two months. But due to Lee hyo-ri, that money gathered in just two weeks. Also she established 'Hyo-ri foundation' which is helpful to poor elder people and donate one hundred million. And she do volunteer work such as deliver briquette with people. Besides she is famous for love dog. She do volunter work in abandoned dog's shelter often. Her dog 'soonsim' is also from shelter. She made song and released album for abandoned dogs. All profits from her album are donated to moving shlter more better place. It is not only donating money but also donating her talents. So i really proud of her.

I would like to introduce Yoo Jae-suk as a korean philanthropist. Yoo Jae-suk is 44 years old. He is most beloved MC in Korea and he is famous in his area. He is also well known because of his good deed. Since 2000, he has donated 5million won to The Beautiful Foundation every month. And he also donated for the Japanese army's comfort women and ferry Sewol. There might be more unknown good deed because whenever he does good deed, not like a ruffler, he never show off what he did. His personality is admirable, too. He gives hope to people who are in trouble and never acts rashly. So I admire him and I hope to follow in his footseps someday.
ReplyDelete-Kim Hyerim (Amy)
I want to introduce Myung Su Park as an unknown philanthropist. He is very famous Korea comedian. He appears in “Infinite Challenge”, “Brave Family” and so on. He has been shown mischievous guy in most of the TV show. So most people think that his character is also same in real life. But he is very warm-hearted men actually. He donates five-hundred thousand won for every month during five years at a charity that is founded for poor children. And he also help patients who don’t have ability to pay charges for an operation. The biggest reason I pick him is he never boast his donation to others. He was very embarrassed when people complimented his action. Sad to say, most people donate not for one’s self-contentment but for getting popularity. I think It is meaningless. However donating for nothing is unusual and it is hard. Because most people have compensation mentality. In that sense he is only a few true philanthropist I think.
ReplyDelete-Jo WooChan(Ron)
I want to introduce Ryu Yangseon as a Korean philanthropist. Maybe you never heard about her, because she is not a well-known person.
ReplyDeleteShe is 79 years old when the article comes out. She sells a salted seafood for 37 years in Noryangjin Market. Where she works 4:00a.m. to 11:p.m. is smaller than 16 square meters. She gathered money and donated 2.3billion won as operating funds scholarships and social selfare facilities for students whose family circumstances is difficult.
Her first donation was donate a salted shrimp to the church for help the needy. Since then, each time money gather, she donated it to elementary, middle and high school, national University, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, nurseries, etc.
Why I chosed her as a admirable person is she donated such great deal of money even if also in difficult circumstances. After divorced from his husband, she raised her daughter alone. In fact, she is not in good health state to work so harshly. She had knee surgery three years ago, and gastric surgery too. Her meal is rice with some dry vegetables and kimchi.
In recent days, there are few people make kimchi their own hand. But she says she would continue donate for help the needy neighbor although business not goes well. She is a very good role model to me to break the idea, donation is exclusive property of the rich. (by Maria)
I will introduce Korea actor Ha hee-ra and actress Choi Soo-jong as philanthropist. They are very famous for charity. Since they are married, they constantly do charity. They donated the coal briquettes in every winter and a large amount of money for patients. In 2009, they recorded the album directly and did showcase for burn patients. They were donated profits of their album to treatment of burn patients who have difficult enviroment. While Ha Hee-ra has been receiving treatment for minor burn, they saw other paitents who suffer from burn. So they was thinking help them. I'm so admire them. Because they are trying to settle down a culture of donation. They are not just to donate the money, they make the enviroment that other people can also join the donation. It's not easy to do charity works every time, they are so admirable.

I think the greatest philanthropist is Kim Hae-Ja, who is a famous actor and entrepreneur. My opinion is based on her autobiography, “Do not even hit with a flower”. I read the book several times and was impressed by her volunteer and mind for Ethiopian. The book contains many stories about Africa, and we can know about its starvation, war, and contemptible conventions such as circumcision. Now that she was pity for poor Africa’s children and women, she has decided to help them through not only money but also volunteering. Although being a weak and old woman, she went to Kenya, Ethiopia, even Somalia which was in war. After coming back to Korea, she sent many books to Africa’s school because she thinks education is the most important part of children, not working. The book which she wrote is based on Arica’s volunteer for 10 years. For these reason, I think she is the greatest philanthropist in Korea.
ReplyDeleteI want to introduce IU as a korean philanthropist . She is a korean singer and she is just 22years old. She had an extraordinary difficult childhood. Her father was in a serious debt because his business collapsed. So he left her to her grandmother. From then on, she lived with her grandmother and relatives. Relatives were always hounded. But she never frustrated and all the while, she dreamed of someday becoming a singer. Finally she became a singer, but it's hard to be a famous singer. But she never give up. Because of her effort she became a famous singer. She was young but she spends her life helping people in need. And today she donates one hundred million won for poor children. I really admire her, because even though spend hard days she has warm heart and did many act of charity. Her work ought to be deserved well of people.

My favorite philanthropist is Joon-ha Jung. He is korean famous comedian and movie actor. It is kind of difficult for donation for anonymous because it's no harm for donating people or it can be also benefit if the donated fact is go to public, but Joon-ha didn't wanted to . His secret donation story was introduced in TVN show, it was the story from woman had sick brother having cancer. She didn't have enough money to chemotherapy, but her brother did the chemotherapy because of Joon-ha's donation to hospital. Her brother was dead in the end, but she thought very thankful to Joon-ha.
ReplyDeleteI want introduce Mrs. Baek seon haeng.
ReplyDeleteSouth Korea's first female philanthropist is Baek seon haeng.
She was born in Suwon. From 7 years old, she grow up in Flagellum home. Although ordained at age 14 became a widow at the age of 16.
she collecting money during 60 years. And it donated the money to the education and social work.
Including 10,000 in the student he attended her funeral, a monument carved her achievements in life was set up in schools.
She was born in 1848, at the time when Korea was not modernized. At that time, collecting money to single-handedly build a bridge and school for people is a great thing. It is important to note that she was the first female philanthropist. At that time, the status of women in Korea is not so high. So, it is surprising that a charity with the power of a woman.

I want to introduce Ill-Kook Song who is Korean actor. He is also a father of Daehan, Minkook, and Manse, who are popular these day. First, he donated 3.69 million won to the Prume Foundation to build children’s rehabilitation hospital. Second, he donated all emoticon sales profits that were sold in Kakao Talk item store to ChildFund Korea for disadvantaged children who spend cold winter in poor surroundings. Finally, for celebrating Children’s Day, he donated 100 million won to ChildFund Korea for children suffered from Nepal earthquake and disease, 100 million won to Prume Foundation to build children’s rehabilitation hospital, and 100 million won to Seoul National University Hospital for Research Fund to study safe twins childbirth.

I want to talk about Sumi Jo, a famous soprano in the world, korean philanthropist. Since she was 4 years old, she have taken lessons in soprano. After she debuted in 1986 as a soprano, Sumi Jo got a big prize who wasn't the first Italians, The Puccini Award in 2008. Now, she is perfoming 300 days in a year. She has a keen interst in disabled person. Recently, 29, December, 2014 she donated two wheelchair swings to Prume Center which is caring about the disabled. The wheelchair swins are very special stuffe that she asked to Ireland company for three months. Plus, in 2012, she donated whole money that she earned by car model, 80,000,000 won for the disabled children. So I'm very proud of her for her passion for the disabled. Actually, I tried to help the disabled but it was hard to me. And many people also have difficult to help them. But someone has to do I think. So, I admire and want to applause to her!

I want to introduce yoo il han, a founder of yoohanyanghang company. he donated all of his property to nation when he die. and to his daughter, he asked to use his stay property for children. he is a special person, because in korea, almost rich people leaves their property to their own family. so, he is so great role model in korea. a lot of people was so surprised when they saw his will. and also, his daughter yoo jae ra, donated all of her money for yoohan foundation, the public company. so I admire him!

I would like to introduce Jang hun Kim as a Korean philanthropist. He was a famous singer in Korea, but now he is more famous for charitable giving. He started to make a contribution in 1998, and donated consistently about 15 billion won for 16 years. The scope and kind of his charitable giving is very wide and various. He gives to money to help many poor people and associations. For example, He donates to the terminally ill, North Korean children, a church for adolescent, Korea advanced institute for science and technology (KAIST), restoration for oil leakage accident in Taean-gun and so on. Especially, His Dokdo island project to let all the people know is known as very famous contribution. He donates to Sejong Dokdo research institute, advertising cost for Dokdo in Times square in New York, and many Dokdo-related corporations. Consistently, he represents his contribution to happiness addiction, not donation addiction. Also He says that the amount of money is not important and Opening one’s heart is more difficult than making a contribution. I have a great regard for not only his donating, but also his own value.
